Cauldeen Pupils carried out their own alterations, amendments and interventions to the statue. Sean chose to represent the 'Burnings' by a wooden cross with flames licking around it's base.

Post Clearances - The MacTotem Exhibition

In 1998 amidst the debate over the statue of the Duke of Sutherland, An Lanntair provided an opportunity for 30 artists to have their say and to place their own creative interpretations upon it. They were invited to interfere; to illustrate their alterations, amendments and interventions to the monument:

In this piece 'The Duke' is replaced by 'The Three Disgraces' (complacency, arrogrance and neglect) highlighting and warning of landowners who are unsympathetic to local populations (here and anywhere) then, now and in the future.

The Duke of Sutherland was a pioneer of enforced relocation of populations and it would be fitting tribute to his memory to in turn relocate his statue. Australia is a good distance and this would have the added bonus of resolving the vexed problem of whether to repair or demolish it.

The exit neon provides a metaphor. A familiar symbol which signals a way out, a directive, and in this case a sign reflecting on a great drama which violated human rights and liberty. The flash of colour seen as a danger sign and representing the burning of the crofts.

The Folk - Work - Place triad in Gaelicis a symbol of the communities which are now being revitalised through community ownership, while with the Scottish Parliament we have serious expectations of improved land rights legislation and democracy.
