Pre-clearances - The Brahan Seer's Prophecies

Coinneach Odhar, the Brahan Seer, among many other things predicted both the Battle of Culloden and the Clearances. On the Clearances he predicted that....

"The day will come when the Big Sheep will put the plough up in the rafters...
...the Big Sheep will overrun the country till they meet the Northern Sea"

With sadness, Coinneach spoke of the day when Culloden would run with blood, when the best of the Highlanders would die for their king.

"The moor, before many generations have passed, shall be stained with the best blood in Scotland. I will not live to see it and I am glad for that."

Some of his predictions have only more recently been fulfilled.

North Sea oil was foretold: "A black rain will bring riches to Aberdeen."

Coinneach Odhar spoke of the day when Scotland would once again have it's own Parliament. This would only come, he said, when men could walk dry shod from England to France. The opening of the channel tunnel which allowed just such a walk was followed a few years later by the opening of the first Scottish Parliament since 1707.

He was also at the time very accurate with his series of prophecies concerning the Seaforth family. However when he informed the Countess of Seaforth that her husband was unfaithful to her, she had him hideously burned to death in a tar-barrel, but not before he foretold the dying out of the Seaforth line, which would end with a man both deaf and dumb. This was indeed fulfilled.

At Chanonry Point, on the shore near Chanonry lighthouse, there is a plaque commemorating the tarring and burning of the Brahan Seer.
